THE ROLE OF an audiovisual translator
Let me ask you something:
Have you ever watched a non-English speaking movie or a TV series?
Have you ever turned on the subtitles on YouTube or on the main streaming platforms?
Could you name one popular foreign show that was successful worldwide?
If you answered "yes" to at least one of the questions above, then you'll know how crucial our role is.
Audiovisual translation aims to promote accessibility by breaking down any linguistic barriers and therefore making a product available worldwide.
Besides mastering a foreign language, a translator must have a deep knowledge of both the source and the target culture: the product will be adapted to the addressed country's habits and mentality.
It's not just about translating written words. Images and sounds represent a big challenge, as well as the time limit and the characters per line.
Why is it important to subtitle audiovisual content?
Subtitles are more useful than you think. They can:
be a transcription of the dialogues if you watch content in the original language
represent a support to help you learn a foreign language
allow you to still enjoy videos in a noisy environment
promote accessibility, by being a great resource for deaf and hard of hearing people
